Miami Stopover: 12 Hours in South Beach

A hub for many flights heading to South America and the Caribbean, Miami’s airport received many flights that often lead to extended stopovers. While you may simply want to hang out at the airport, there is a chance you might have enough time to make your way to world famous South Beach and have some fun under the sun. You can enjoy a delicious meal before arriving to your destination, a walk on the sand, or even a couple of drinks by the beach as well as different activities you will be able to enjoy even if you are not spending more than 12 hours in South Beach Miami. If you only have a 4 hour stopover you might not be able to do much, but 12 hours just gives you the perfect window of opportunity to enjoy the city! Downtown’s Bayside Marketplace

At Downtown’s Bayside Marketplace, located on 401 Biscayne Blvd., there are a lot of things to see and do, including grabbing a bite from a lot of different places that offer a variety of foods, shopping at many different stores (you can choose from over 150 stores!), marine excursions, enjoy live music every day, and the famous patio that houses restaurants that offer international cuisine. Conveniently located in the heart of Miami, Downtown’s Bayside Marketplace is just 5 minutes away from South Beach and just a 20 minute drive from the International Airport of Miami.   Downtown’s Bayside Marketplace is open from 10 AM to 10 PM from Monday to Thursday, and from 10 AM to 11 PM from Friday to Saturday, and finally, on Sundays you can find it open from 11 AM to 9 PM.

Dolphin Mall

Up for some shopping? Approximately a 25 drive from the airport, Dolphin Mall is a great destination if you have the time and would like to spend some of it in one of the greatest malls of the whole of Miami. Not only is it the biggest retail value mall in the Miami-Dade county, it is also famous for its food and entertainment, along with the more than 240 value-oriented stores you can find.  Miami Design District

Conveniently located only 5 miles away from Miami International Airport, The Miami Design District, located on 3841 NE 2nd Avenue, is open from Monday to Saturday from 11 AM to 7 PM and on Sundays from 12 PM to 6 PM. Restaurant hours, however, may vary. Miami Design District is a hot neighborhood dedicated to innovative fashion, design, architecture and dining experiences, and it is a great and vibrant destination for both visitors and locals, as it offers the best shopping, cultural and culinary experiences within architecturally significant context. Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink

If what you are looking for is a great dining experience, then Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink is a great option for you, with the perfect combination of a laid-back atmosphere and seriously good food. This bistro’s owner and chef is none other than Michael Schwartz, the James Beard award-winner for his homemade, unpretentious style, with an emphasis on great local ingredients. The bistro is located on 130 N.E. 40th Street and is open 7 days a week. You can find their menu here, which offers lunch, an afternoon menu, dinner and brunch.

The Art Deco Walking Tour is a 90 minute walking tour that provides an introduction to the Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern (MiMo) styles found within Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. You will be able to explore hotels, restaurants, and many other commercial structures. Here you can find the dates and times so you can find the one that best fits your trip.


Sightseeing Cruises Miami

If you are really looking for a new and relaxing experience, then you will definitely love a cruise along the scenic Biscayne Bay. You can enjoy the view, and even beverages and some light snacks that will be available for purchase in the 90 minute cruise. The price for the cruise is $28 per adult, and $19 per child (from 4 to 12 years old), children under the age of 3 enter free of charge. Sightseeing Cruises Miami has modern yachts (Island Queen, Island Lady and Miami Lady) that offer the utmost in comforts and style, as well as being able to comfortably accommodate up to 140 passengers. You can either purchase your tickets at the ticket booth by showing up 30 minutes prior to departure, or by purchasing the tickets online on their website.

12 Hours in South Beach Without Spending Money

Of course, you don’t have to stick to this places. You can also grab a cab or a bus and stop by the beach and have a swim, take a walk, or even just lay in the sand enjoying of the day or reading a book. Or maybe you are more comfortable just staying inside of the airport, but beware, there is no available wifi, so you might want to take that into consideration. In the end, it is all up to you; Miami has a lot of activities you can enjoy even if you only have a few of hours to kill. Being such an active city, you will surely be able to find something that gets your attention and make your waiting a lot less dull and a lot more memorable. Just because Miami is only a stop along the way  does not mean you can’t start your vacation while on your way to your final destination!
