Public Transportation in South Beach

Miami is a big city, and trying to navigate it can prove to be a real task, however you have the option to let someone else do it for you at a cheap price! Public transportation in South Beach is a great way to get where you want to go without having to drive yourself (or, in case you are a tourist, it’s much cheaper than taxis or getting lost!) Metrorail, Metromover and Metrobus are all low-cost alternatives and an excellent way to see all that Miami has to offer, it’s also great for the environment and helps with the traffic congestion! Plus, doesn’t having someone else driving for you sound like a great idea? No matter how much traffic there is, all you have to do is sit down and relax.

Traveling rail-line: Metrorail System & Metromover

public transportation south beachFor those who hate traffic and would rather travel using a rail-line, the metrorail and the metromover are just the option for you!. The metrorail system is a 25-mile dual track that provides service to Miami International Airport (MIA) and runs through a lot of different parts of Miami, including South Miami and downtown Miami. The system currently uses 136 cars, and there are 23 accessible Metrorail stations which are about one mile apart. However, if you are going to ride the Metrorail you need an EASY card or EASY ticket, as the faregates do not accept cash. If you do not use the Metrorail often you can get the EASY ticket, which expires after 60 days, but for those who do the EASY card is the best option, as it is a durable, plastic reloadable fare card, and they have a 20 year life-span. You can get either or both. For more information on how to acquire either you can go here.

Pro tip: If you don’t know how to get where you are going using the metrorail system you can visit this website. There you can get transit directions according to the date and time you will be needing them. You can also find a map of the stations and the schedules, so your trip is as easy and comfortable as possible!

The metromover system is a commuter as it runs south and west into Miami’s suburbs. It has two major “loops”, as they’re called, the inner loop (Omni), and the outer loop (Brickell). Here you can find a map of the stations and more information on the metromover system.

Metrobus

public transportation south beachThe metrobus system goes through Miami-Dade County 365 days a year and it operates more than 90 routes. It is designed to intersect with Metrorail and Metromover for your convenience. The MDT’s bus system serves all major shopping, entertainment and cultural centers, as well as major hospitals and schools, making it a practical and cheap option. One of the benefits of the Metrobus over the rail system is that it covers areas of the city that the rail system doesn’t, such as Fort Lauderdale and the Florida Keys. Just like the Metrorail, you can pay for the Metrobus using an EASY card or EASY ticket, and the bus rides start at $2.25. Even though some routes work 24 hours a day, you can check individual route schedules here.

Pro tip: MDT Tracker is an mobile app for Android phones that allows you to access information such as ‘where is the train? The bus?’, metrorail station information, fare information, among many other options that will help you have the most up-to-date and accurate route and schedule information free of charge.
